Dig a hole 2 to 2.5 times greater than the diameter of the root ball. Do not dig the planting hole any deeper than the root ball since the soil that you disturb will eventually settle causing the plant to settle too deep. Prepare the hole 1”–2” too shallow. This will ensure that your plant will not sink too deep to breathe.

2. Amend the existing soil that you remove with approximately 25% organic matter. (Recommended sources of organic matter are Black Forest, Bumper Crop, Peat moss and Compost.

3. If planting burlap and balled plant material; completely remove all burlap and rope from around the root ball before planting. If planting a container grown plant, gently break-up the root ball from the base and side of the foot mass. If the plant is too root-bound, you will need to “butterfly” the roots by vertically splitting open the bottom of the root mass.

4. Correctly position the plant upright in the center of your planning hole.

5. Back-fill the planting hole with your prepared soil mix. Tamp the back-fill & then thoroughly water to ensure that the soil has settled.

6. We recommend using a new transplant starter, such as Master Nursery Root Master B-1. These chemicals have been enriched with beneficial additives to help stimulate root growth & development.

7. All disturbed soil must then be finished off with 2”-3” of mulching material to prevent soil erosion & moisture loss.

8. Continued post-transplant care will provide your new transplant with a better chance of survival. Be sure to water the plant regularly for the first growing season. Watering requirement will vary with the weather cycles. To determine if your plant needs watering, place your hand under the mulching and into the soil. If moist, wait to water. If dry, place your garden hose on a slow trickle at the base of the trunk & allow it remain there for approximately 15 minutes. This will ensure an adequate, deep watering which will also encourage deep root development.
Denison goes green with Propane http://www.denisonlandscaping.com/blogs.aspx?ID=59 dpclark Wed, 19 Oct 2011 17:49:42 GMT http://www.denisonlandscaping.com/blogs.aspx?ID=59
On October 14th 2011 Denison Landscaping took possession of two Rouche Clean Tech Ford f250s with 5.4 liter propane conversion kits. If you have asked yourself this recently, then you may be dealing with the grass-like weed known as yellow nutsedge. Yellow nutsedge, despite its appearances is not a grass at all, rather it is a member of the sedge family and it can be found throughout the region in homeowners lawns at this time of year actively growing and growing and growing and ruining the aesthetics of your turf. You can identify this weed by its yellowish green leaves, its triangular shaped stem and its rapid growth rate (generally growing 2-6" taller than the canopy of the rest of the turf). It is the rapid growth rate, prolific reproduction and color which draws negative attention to the turf and is why, as a homeowner you want to stay on top of this weed.

Here are a few tips to keep your yard from being overrun. Fertilize regularly to maximize your lawn's density; mow your lawn at the appropriate height (this is generally a setting or two higher than what most people set their mowers at); and make sure your lawn receives adequate water throughout the summer to stave off stress.

If you already notice nutsedge in your yard, then handpulling can be an effective means of control, however you will want to get as much of the roots up as possible when you do this otherwise the plant's underground tubers may be able to produce more shoots. When the nutsedge is too prevalent for handpulling to be an effective means for control then it may be time to call in a licensed presticide applicator who can spray the lawn targeting the sedge specifically. This would ideally be performed in late spring when the sedge is still young and can be controlled with chemicals more readily; late summer spraying may require more than one application for satisfactory results.

Accuweather forecast for Winter 2012 - 2013 http://www.denisonlandscaping.com/blogs.aspx?ID=89 LHockett Mon, 20 Aug 2012 17:52:02 GMT http://www.denisonlandscaping.com/blogs.aspx?ID=89
NYC, Philly, DC: Winter 2012-2013 will be "Snow" Joke

By Meghan Evans, Meteorologist
Aug 20, 2012; Below are easy care instructions to assist with proper growth and development.

Watering Trees and Shrubs:

If there is less than 1 inch of rainfall per week, water as follows: Trees will need to be watered two times per week in hot, dry weather and one time in cooler weather. Water for 3 to 5 minutes or until water starts to flow out of the hole. Shrubs will need to be watered two times per week in hot, dry weather and one time per week in cooler weather. Water each shrub for 2 to 3 minutes.

Fertilizer - Trees and Shrubs:

Your newly planted trees and shrubs have been fertilized. We recommend the following fertilization schedule for your trees, shrubs, and groundcover:

1. Deciduous trees - Evergreen trees

2. When: 12 Months after planting; Type: Tree stakes or full purpose granular feed according to package directions.

3. Deciduous shrubs - Evergreen shrubs

     When: Fall - September 1 - 15 Spring: March 15 - April 15 Type: Balance fertilizer like 10-10-10

4. Groundcover

When: September 1-15 and March 15 - April 15 Type: Liquid Miracle Gro, or 20-20-20, 2-3 applications 2 weeks apart

5. Annuals - Perennial

When: Spring through June Type: Liquid fertilizer, similar to groundcover instructions. Work granular fertilizer (like 10-10-10) into soil when planting.

Stakes:

Your newly staked trees are to remain stakes for 12 months. This allows the trees to stabilize in the soil and start root growth.

Preparation for Winter:

In the late fall up to mid-December evergreens would be thoroughly watered and mulched, if necessary and is the owners' responsibility. This will ensure that your plants have a reserve of water to help replenish what they loose in the crisp winter winds. The mulch (2-3" deep) will keep the water in the soil rather than evaporating and will moderate soil temperature, protecting the plant's roots. During dry, mild winter months, watering may be necessary.

If you have any questions or concerns about your plants, please give us a call at (301) 567-0210. Come by and visit our Nursery at 8911 Oxon Hill Road, Fort Washington, Maryland for your additional plant needs. It could take more time if you forget about it like a dirty sock behind the dryer. Although, I feel like I'm always losing the clean ones ... Anytime you lay seed or sod, you HAVE to water it EVEN AFTER IT GETS GOING! Quit fooling around. Water it in the summer as well. After a couple years, you may be able to relax for a minute, but don't do that in the middle of July and August...if you want to maintain your turf.

If you have a lot of patchiness and compaction around your yard, for whatever reason, you should probably AERATE AND OVERSEED. "Overseed" is just a technical term for seeding an existing lawn. On the other hand, if you have new sod from moving into your new home and you have an irrigation system giving it plenty of water AND Denison Maintenance Department stopping by to weed/feed at various intervals throughout the year, you may need to DETHATCH your lawn every couple years or so. Thatch is a layer of decomposing grass roots/stems that builds up between the green crown of the grass and the soil base. This is bad for nutrient and oxygen flow if it builds up too much. You should not have more than about 1/2" of thatch in your lawn. You'll kind of know when you have a "thatchy" lawn when it feels squishy to walk on.

And just to clear something up, thatch is NOT created from grass clippings. Grass clippings actually add about half the nitrogen your lawn needs throughout the year when left to fall back on the lawn. True story.

If you are going to aerate, use a core aerator to do the job. You can hire a professional (Like Denison) or you can rent one. When it comes to seed, people you get what you pay for, period! Don't skimp on the seed and use a cool zone, tall fescue mix for this area. If you want to use zoysia, fine, it's okay to have a green lawn for 2 months...no problem.

To dethatch your lawn, you can do a heavy raking, rent a machine, or have Denison do it for you. We can come out and dethatch your lawn, lay some seed and organic matter that will help the soil get the seed started.

Hope you find these hints helpful - HAPPY FALL AND GOOD LUCK...A. Do Not dig the planting hole any deeper than the rootball is long because the soil that you disturb will eventually settle causing the plant to also settle too deep. Preparing the planting hole 1” to 2” too shallow will doubly insure that your plant will not sink too deep to breath and will not suffocate.

2. Amend the existing soil with 25% organic matter. Untie the rope at the base of the trunk, peel back some of the burlap and plant with not affect the growth of the roots into the ground.

4. If planting a container grown plant, gently break-up the roots on the sides and bottom. Plants grown in containers can be “Root-bound” With no room for additional growth, roots become tangled, matted, and grow in circles. Root-bound plants placed in the ground without having their roots untangled often fail to overcome their choked condition. This results in stunting the plants growth and potential or not surviving. If the plant is too root-bound, you will need to “butterfly” the roots by vertically splitting open the bottom of the root mass.

5. Correctly position the plant/tree upright in the center of the hole. Be sure to water the plant regularly for the first growing season. Watering requirements will vary with the weather cycles. To determine if your plant needs watering, place your hand under the mulching and into the soil. If moist, wait to water. If dry, place your garden hose on a slow trickle at the base and allow it to remain there for approximately 15 minutes. This will ensure an adequate, deep watering which will also encourage deep root development.

10. Finally, remember to fertilize your material. Plant material recently transplanted and material still in their rapidly growing stage should be fertilized yearly according to their specific needs. Well established, mature trees should be fertilized only every 3 to 4 years.

Denison Garden Center 8911 Oxon Hill Rd, Ft. however, it is a time of year when a lot of damage can happen. Denison Landscaping wants people to know how to care for plants, trees, and shrubs during the winter.. Winter yard tips include the following:

Continue Watering..Just because it isn't hot, doesn't mean that plants don't need water. Continue watering until a hard freeze. A well-hydrated plant has a better chance of survival.

Don't Shake branches covered with Snow and Ice..It is best to gently brush off snow. Shaking limbs may break them. Wait for ice and frozen snow to melt naturally. If a limb does break, have it removed as soon as weather permits. It will help the tree or shrub heal better in the spring.

Watch out for Winter Warm Spells..It is normally not a problem if you get a few warm days in the middle of winter; however, if you covered plants with cones or cold frames, you may want to ventilate them during the day and cover them again at night.

Prune..Late winter is a good time to prune and shape ornamental trees and roses.

Another thing to think about in the winter is the use of salt or melting agents for snow and ice. It can damage plants and trees by drawing water away from their roots.

Evergreen trees are particularly sensitive to salt. Look for brown needles or leaves on trees and shrubs; they are signs of damage. Building barriers to protect the plants from runoff and adding more sand and gravel to the salt mix will help minimize damage.

For more Tips or to answer questions please contact us at 301-567-0210.

PREPARING YOUR HOME ON THE OUTSIDE TO SELL http://www.denisonlandscaping.com/blogs.aspx?ID=102 LHockett Tue, 06 Nov 2012 18:43:19 GMT http://www.denisonlandscaping.com/blogs.aspx?ID=102
STAGE YOUR HOME BEFORE YOU PUT IT ON THE MARKET

Staging your home ranks second only to pricing when it comes to getting showings and getting an offer!
Many sellers make the mistake of investing in staging only after their home has been on the market.
You only have one time to make a good first impression, a very wise person once said, and that “one time” is the day your home goes on the market!
Implementing staging after the fact only makes you look desperate as a seller and misses the opportunity to impress those serious buyers that pass through in the first three weeks of being on the market!
Here are the top 7 tasks to complete before you go live!
Exterior:
· Lawn mowed, walkways edged
· Leaves & all debris removed from front yard at the very least
· Driveways & walkways repaired, replaced, resealed as needed
· Put a fresh coat of paint on shutters, trim, moldings
· Pressure wash the walkways, patios, driveways, siding
· Flower beds cleaned up with fresh mulch; remove excess plantings; prune or remove overgrown shrubs that cover the front of the house or any windows

Looking great on the outside will attract them inside!

Good Luck from Denison Landscaping,Inc. Call us with any staging needs - we are just around the corner AT 301-567-0210!

DEER MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES http://www.denisonlandscaping.com/blogs.aspx?ID=103 LHockett Tue, 04 Dec 2012 19:19:38 GMT http://www.denisonlandscaping.com/blogs.aspx?ID=103
In our area, there has been a significant increase in the deer population. Hmmm. I wonder why?
Well, other than they are fond of each other, it could be because of the state of our economy. One minute we’re ready to build and develop. The next minute we have to take a break because nobody can afford to move. And yet another moment we decide we are too humane to control the deer population with non-humane techniques.
They are just deer…they don’t make decisions for themselves. We have to decide what the best approach is for our individual deer situations.
Here are a few things to consider and use interchangeably when attempting to limit the deer from consuming your entire landscape:
Population Management—No it’s not a dirty word, but sometimes does not get the open-minded consideration other options may enjoy. If you are in a community with this option, you may want to get together with your neighbors and consider this. There are recommended deer/acre guidelines and surveys that can help you and your community decide if this is the right path. Contact MD DNR Wildlife Division for assistance.
Fencing— Nothing dirty about this word. It’s a safe method of control and it doesn’t have to be fancy. It just has to be about 4’ high. The taller the fence, the more discouraged they will become and move on. Low-profile netting for your annuals/perennials can be purchased at a garden center. Invisible dog fences work as well…if they come with a dog that is charging toward them…
Vegetation Management—This is the best way to control the deer around your home if other methods are out of your reach, or control. Making a change in the buffet items will make the deer go to the place next door. You can access plenty of ‘deer-resistant’ plant information online. Most landscapers are well-versed in what works and what doesn’t in the field. I often recommend giving the deer something to feed on at the wood’s edge to try and discourage feeding close to the house. I do not have confirmation that this method works just yet…
Pesticide use—This is my least favorite method, but I have had positive feedback regarding the performance of the deer sprays. If you have a landscape that you just can’t part with, and do not care for the netting method, this might be the route for you. However, it’s very interactive and can become costly to use affectively. If an entire community is using spray repellant, deer may become immune to the taste/smell and continue feeding.
There is no blanket solution to the deer problem we have created, compounded, and irritated with the evolution and movement of construction. Making a Wildlife Management Plan for your individual landscape can reduce your stress and let you enjoy your garden again! Good Luck! It is true that lawn growth differs from one region to another. As obvious in most of the countries, lawns are hidden under the snow and the growth remains dormant for the entire season. But did you know that taking special care of your lawns during the harsh winters can still let you maintain it to a greater extend? Here are some wonderful tips to help take the right steps at the right time.
• Keep your lawns always clean and neat. Do not leave any of the objects including toys, dry leaves, clutters or any leftovers on your lawn as it can choke the grass leading to several ill-effects thus welcoming mice, insects or even seriously damaging pests. Maintain the height of your mower to around 0.5" to 1.0" so that the grass can always resist extreme weather conditions and at the same time remain healthy by staying away from disease conditions. Also ensure that the grass is not trimmed down to the shortest length as it becomes difficult for it to withstand the extremities of the climatic conditions.
• Limit excessive traffic on the grass during the harsh season of the year. Especially in winters, foot traffic must be prevented or lowered down as there are chances of late recovery time if the path becomes excessively worn out. For this, you can always keep the sidewalks clean without ice or snow so that the guests can freely walk on it instead of stamping onto the lawn.
• To protect your lawn and to keep it green throughout the year, it is important to consider it as a 'No Parking' spot. Even the smallest vehicle can kill the grass that is left helpless under the tires. This in turn leads to the growth of different types of weeds as well crabgrass thus destroying the entire space gradually.
• Preparing your lawn during the fall months will help in maintaining your grass until the rise of spring. It is important to get the lawn ready for the harsh season. For this, it must be fertilized, aerated as well as mowed before the freeze. What can I say, I’m a landscaper, not a plumber! Landscaping is not rocket science, but trusting anyone with a truck and shovel can leave your tranquil patio looking like a pile of rocks.

2. Portfolio – Check out the company’s pictures, especially noting work your designer has directly influenced. If you don’t like their ‘best of the best’ pictures, you should not be the next addition to their album.

3. Wish list – Take some time prior to meeting with your designer to write down ideas of how you would like the project to look. Every yard presents a unique set of challenges that can limit some wishes, but often a creative solution can be found.

4. Budget – Hardscapes, water features, irrigation and fresh plant material are all great additions to your home, but they can start to add up. Discussing your budget with your landscape designer can save a lot of time and help get the project started sooner. Setting a budget allows your designer to create a plan that fits your home, addresses your wish list and does not empty your wallet.

5. Questions – What type of material will be used for the patio? What color of roses are available? What type of warranty do you offer? Ask tons of questions; your designer is there to help and guide you through the process.

6. Trust your instincts – If your designer does not have answers, respect your budget, or seem concerned with making your wish list work, trust your gut and find another contractor.

7. Let your designer do their job - Once you have selected a reputable contractor and talked about the results you want, the fun begins. Trust your designer to help make your vision a reality by striking a balance of creativity and practicality with your design. Keep an open mind to new ideas you may have never considered.

8. Subcontractors – Ask if subcontractors will be used. If so, the company you just interviewed is not the company that is performing the work. Subs can result in scheduling and quality issues.

9. Schedule – Be sure to ask how long the installation will take. Set a realistic start and end date and continue to communicate with your contractor as the installation progresses. Keep in mind that weather and other items may arise that are out of the contractor’s control.

Choosing a qualified landscape designer and reputable company is the first step in obtaining the landscape you have always wanted for your home or business.

This post was written by;

Adam Davis

Landscape Design Coordinator - Denison Landscaping Inc.
SPRING HAS SPRUNG http://www.denisonlandscaping.com/blogs.aspx?ID=113 LHockett Mon, 22 Apr 2013 11:02:25 GMT http://www.denisonlandscaping.com/blogs.aspx?ID=113 The weather is breaking and now is the time to work off some of the winter blues. There are many common since things to do that will help your landscape thrive as the temperatures increase, the first item would be to finish leaf removal in the landscape beds and lawn areas then inspecting mulch levels to see if you need to add or subtract mulch ,pine bark or shredded mulch should be 2”-3” thick ,more is not better and it can rob oxygen to your plants if it’s too thick -too thin could provide opportunities for additional weed growth. Now here is the tip of the week that most home owners over look, Dandelion’s are common weeds for the lawn their job is to use their long tap root to pull calcium out of the lower soil profile and move it to the surface for other plant life to use. Calcium is what moves many other nutrients in to the plant it’s like a school bus for other nutrients to climb on for a free ride, local soils are usually deficient in calcium with and overabundance level of magnesium its best to get a professional soil sample taken but like most Americans we don’t have time to wait. Denison Landscaping supplies bagged lime that is correct for this area, we can also provide soil testing from a certified soil lab and then make recommendations for your landscape. Calcium is a lot cheaper than chemical sprays so consider the natural solution. Soil testing usually takes 10 days and $25.00 so let’s get moving!
